WeTransfer vs Dropbox Transfer: Which Should You Use?

October 19, 2026

Two ways to send a big file. Which one fits the job?

In the WeTransfer vs Dropbox Transfer choice, WeTransfer is the quicker option for sending a large file once, while Dropbox Transfer suits people who already keep their files in Dropbox and want longer expiry dates and password-protected links on a team plan. Neither is built around one-time, passphrase-protected delivery of sensitive documents.

You have a large file to send. It is too big for email. Two names come to mind straight away: WeTransfer and Dropbox.

Both send a download link. Both let the recipient download without an account. The differences sit in the small print: how much you can send for free, how long the link lasts, who may use the plan, and what happens to the file afterwards.

This guide compares the two on the figures each company publishes, then shows when a third option makes more sense.

Quick Summary

  • WeTransfer Free allows up to 10 transfers or 3 GB in any 30-day window, with links that last up to 3 days. Its pricing page says it is for individual, non-commercial use only.
  • Dropbox Basic (free) lets you send transfers of up to 2 GB that expire after 7 days.
  • Paid plans: WeTransfer Ultimate is $25 USD a month billed monthly; Dropbox Standard is $15 USD per user a month billed yearly and sends up to 100 GB.
  • Passwords: WeTransfer says passwords work on every plan. Dropbox adds passwords and custom expiry dates to transfers from the Standard plan up.
  • For sensitive client files, a passphrase shared separately, a set expiry and a record of retrieval matter more than raw size. SureSend Pro is $7 CAD/month plus applicable taxes.

What Is the Difference Between WeTransfer and Dropbox Transfer?

WeTransfer is a standalone service built only for sending files by link, while Dropbox Transfer is a sending feature inside a Dropbox cloud storage account. WeTransfer is faster to start with; Dropbox Transfer makes more sense if your files already live in Dropbox and you pay for a team plan.

With WeTransfer, you drag and drop files into the browser to start a transfer. The pricing page says recipients do not need to log in or sign up. With Dropbox, you pick files from your Dropbox (or upload them) and create a transfer, and Dropbox’s help centre says the recipient does not need a Dropbox account either.

The other big difference is who the free plan is for. WeTransfer’s pricing page labels the Free plan “For individual, non-commercial use only,” and the Starter and Ultimate plans “For individual use only.” A business sending client files should look at the Teams plan, or at a different tool.

What Is Dropbox Transfer?

Dropbox Transfer is a Dropbox feature for sending copies of files you do not need to collaborate on, such as a finished contract or a long video. The recipient gets a link to download the files, and Dropbox’s help centre says “Dropbox Transfer is available to all Dropbox users.”

It differs from an ordinary Dropbox shared link, which is meant for working on files together: Dropbox describes Transfer as a way to “send files you don’t need to collaborate on.” According to Dropbox’s help centre, transfer size depends on your plan: 2 GB on Basic, 50 GB on Plus and Family, 100 GB on Standard and most business plans, and 250 GB on Business Plus and Enterprise.

WeTransfer vs Dropbox: How Do the Free Plans Compare?

On the free plans, WeTransfer limits you to 10 transfers or 3 GB in any 30-day window, with links that last up to 3 days. Dropbox Basic caps each transfer at 2 GB, with links that expire after 7 days, and its free account includes 2 GB of storage.

WeTransfer’s plan limits page explains that the 30-day window rolls: “Your transfer limit is calculated based on the transfers you’ve sent in the last 30 days — not a fixed calendar month.” If you send files every week, a free plan on either service will run out quickly.

WeTransfer’s paid plans range from Starter at $10 USD a month to Ultimate and Teams at $25 USD a month, billed monthly. Dropbox’s Plus plan is $9.99 USD a month and Standard is $15 USD per user a month, both billed yearly. Dropbox includes cloud storage and file sync; WeTransfer focuses on sending.

Prices are as shown on WeTransfer’s pricing page and Dropbox’s plans page on October 18, 2026, in US dollars. WeTransfer’s Ultimate sending limit comes from its help centre, and the Dropbox expiry rules from the Dropbox Transfer help article. Both companies also offer yearly or monthly billing at different prices.

Which Is Safer for Business and Client Files?

For client files, the safest choice is the one that lets you add a password you send separately, set a short expiry date and see when the file was downloaded. Dropbox offers passwords and custom expiry dates on transfers only from the Standard plan up. WeTransfer says passwords work on every plan, but its cheaper plans are for individual use.

Both companies describe encryption. Dropbox’s plans page lists “256-bit AES and SSL/TLS encryption” on its paid plans. WeTransfer’s pricing page lists password-protected transfers, data encryption and two-factor authentication among its security features, and its password page says the password “never travels with the notification email.” That is the right habit with any tool: send the link one way and the password another.

Then there is what happens after the link expires. Dropbox’s help centre says expired transfers are deleted from its servers 30 days after expiry on Basic, Family and Plus, and 180 days after expiry on Standard and higher plans. WeTransfer says Ultimate, Teams and Enterprise users can recover expired transfers if the feature was turned on when the transfer was created. Both are useful for creative work. For a tax return or a medical record, a file that outlives its purpose is one more copy to worry about.

Canada’s privacy law for businesses, PIPEDA, says personal information “shall be protected by security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information.” Our plain-language guide to PIPEDA explains what that means in practice, and our guide to whether email is secure covers why the attachment route is the weakest of all.

Where Does SureSend Fit?

This is where SureSend comes into the picture. SureSend is a Canadian secure file transfer service that sends files through a passphrase-protected link that expires on a date you choose. SureSend encrypts every file while it’s sent and while it’s stored (TLS in transit, AES-256 at rest). It was built for Canadian professionals who send documents that should not sit in an inbox or a shared folder: tax slips, contracts, statements and records.

The link goes by email. The passphrase goes by phone or text.

Here is exactly how it works:

  1. Create a transfer. Sign in, add one or more recipient email addresses, upload your files, and choose an expiry date of up to 21 days.
  2. Set a passphrase. SureSend emails each recipient a secure link, but the passphrase is never included in that email. You share it separately, by phone or text.
  3. The recipient downloads. They open the link, enter the passphrase, and download the files. They do not need a SureSend account.
  4. Track and control it. Your dashboard shows when the transfer is retrieved. You can cancel it before it is downloaded, and it expires automatically.

Each transfer allows one successful download. If the download is interrupted, the recipient can try again until one download completes; after that the link cannot be used again, and the transfer’s status updates to Retrieved.

SureSend doesn’t keep your files forever; they’re removed when the transfer expires. Your dashboard shows every transfer’s status, so you can see which files were retrieved and which expired or were cancelled.

You can start on the free Starter plan. Pro is $7 CAD/month plus applicable taxes, with transfers up to 2 GB. SureSend is not a storage service and does not replace Dropbox for shared folders. It does one job: getting a sensitive file to the right person, once. A secure transfer tool is one safeguard within your own privacy practices, not a compliance solution on its own.

Send Confidential Files, Not Just Big Ones

SureSend encrypts every file while it’s sent and while it’s stored: TLS in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. Send up to 2 GB per transfer, protect it with a passphrase you share separately, set an expiry of up to 21 days, and see when it is retrieved. Your recipient needs no account. New subscribers get 30 days of Pro free, with no credit card required. Start sending securely for free.

A Quick Workflow That Works

Whichever tool you choose, this routine keeps a large or sensitive file under control:

  1. Decide whether the file is confidential. If it holds personal or financial information, treat it that way.
  2. Shrink it if you can: compress video, or zip a folder of documents.
  3. Set the shortest expiry date that still gives the recipient time to download.
  4. Add a password or passphrase, and send it by phone or text, never in the same email as the link.
  5. Check that the file was downloaded, then let the link expire.

Sign in, add your recipient, upload your file, and SureSend it. Our guide on how to send documents securely online compares six more methods.

The Bottom Line

WeTransfer vs Dropbox Transfer comes down to habit and plan. WeTransfer is the fastest way to send a big file once. Dropbox Transfer is the natural choice if your team already works in Dropbox Standard or higher. For confidential client files, neither free plan was designed for the job: WeTransfer Free is for non-commercial use, and Dropbox Basic has no password option on transfers.

Send big files with whatever is quickest. Send sensitive ones the right way. Just SureSend it.
